Examine the five prerequisites for victory before going into a war:
    1. Make a realistic assessment of your military strength and compact it with that of your opponents. If yours is greater you have the chance of winning.
    2. Know the strength of your army in terms of number and weapons and compare it with that of your enemies.
    3. Know that victory is achieved if there is unity in spirit, goal and objective.
    4. Understand that victory is achieved if there is adequate preparation and a strong defence.
    5. Know that victory is achieved if the leaders of the army are competent and trusted by their king or supervisor to implement well-thought-out plans.

    Application
The business world also has five rules for observation in order that competition be successful:

    2. Compare your strength in terms of personnel and quality of products.
    3. Achieve unity.
    4. Try your best.
    5. Have understanding, efficient and trust between the top management personnel and the staff below them.

If you know your enemies as well as you know yourself, you stand a very good chance of winning. But if you know only your own situation and not your enemies', then you have only a fifty per cent chance of triumphing over your enemies. On the extreme end, if you do not even know what is happening in your own camp or your enemy's, you can be sure that you will be out of the fight.

    Application
To be competitive and productive, the manager of a company has to know everything about his own organization as well as his competitors'. He has to keep in touch with the rest of the world.

A general capable of victory is one whe makes preparation in every way before he leads an army to attack his enemies. If the enemies are strong he waits until they are weak before he attacks. If he cannot win he defends and waits, alert. If he can win he attacks. If his military power is weak he waits, but if it is strong he attacks. If he is depending on retreating he first finds an impenetrable fort or hiding place. If he takes the offensive he ensures his own victory.

    Application
A general manager must know that success is obtained through good leadership; good management of the production of goods, of finances and of time; and low costs in production. Before he competes with others in the business world he has to make sure that his products are competitive and of high quality.

A good warrior is one who does not openly declare war and resort to force. If a warrior has to use violence and military might instead of strategic planning and tactics to control his enemies, he is only an ordinary warrior, not a good one. We cannot deem a person who can lift a feather or a strand of hair a strong person, nor one who can see the sun and moon as having good vision and one who who can hear the thunder as having good hearing.

    Application
A good busines manager is one who makes money for his company and increases productivity without much open conflict with other business competitors or exhausting the resources of his company.
